The chicago libraries are full of a bunch of whack jobs. Not only can I not drink plain ol' water, but I was asked to put the bottle in my bag so it didn't spill. And she didn't leave until she witnessed me putting said sealed bottle into my bag. LAME.

Welcome to Filthy Kitties 2.0, Mobile Edition
Now that I am finally figuring out the full capabilities of my phone, nearly 2 years after getting it, I've discovered that I can post directly to here. You'd think after a year of posting pictures to facebook, using google text to find restaurant addresses, and sending tweets via my mobile device, I'd have stumbled upon this by now. I guess I didn't think about the possibility that blogger offers a text/email posting function. My phone is a rather shitty (comparatively speaking, with iPhones, Droids, and the like), out-of-manufacture LG Dare and has terrible internet browsing thus leading me away from what I'd initially bought the phone to do - torture the internet with my inane blog posts. With all that behind me, I'm ready to embark on a new adventure, or rather get back to the roots of this blog. There won't be many kitties photos, as they reside about 40 miles apart now, but there will be ridonkulous photo posts instead. I'm guessing there will be a photo flood of old pictures now that I've got the hang of this. Enjoy!

Baby this. Baby that.
Babies. It seems like all anyone is doing these days is having babies. And taking a lead from one of my favorite blogs, I have to put in my own thoughts about this.
First off, let me make it clear, I love babies and children. I work with kids in my practicum, have worked with them at a behavioral health center, and in general enjoy these little critters. That said, I'm sick and tired of people who define themselves ONLY by there children. I know having kids is a tremendous game changer, but there's a line where your peers might get sick of only hearing you babble about your bundle of joy. I love photos of your cute baby dressed up as a penguin or as a tiny pony. I don't enjoy, however, seeing photos of placentas, umbilical cords, poop your child has excreted, the inside of your uterus (via ultrsound), or huge bare pregnant stomachs. I just don't get why people need to share all of these private moments on sites like facebook. It's great you're learning the joys of parenthood, but honestly, most people don't give a crap about the things your child does except the cute/funny moments. I think these are all beautiful things in transitioning into parenthood, but share these experiences with your significant others and family members, allowing some near random stranger on facebook in these moments seems creepy to me.
Two more of my bitchy criticisms to go. One thing that pisses me off to no end is the, "woe is me" complex held by whiny parents on facebook. Yes, having a child is hard work and takes a lot of your time, but guess what? Most people end up having children and go through the same experience. You don't need to tout it as a way of validating yourself above and beyond someone with a high pressure, long-hours job, or hell, a graduate student. I hate hearing people bitch about how their life is tougher than others, it probably isn't. My favorite example of the flip side of this argument is someone I go to school with. She's working on a PhD and raising a new born and I don't hear her talk about how she's busier than everyone else. And she probably is in reality. Being a parent is freakin' hard and a big time drain, but I hope that you knew and accepted that before getting knocked up. I don't accept that children never sleep and never give you 5 minutes of peace. You just probably spend those moments enjoying all the precious moments and amazing things that come from being a parent.
Finally, I'm tired of parents who only post statuses related to daily baby drama. I know kids are a big strain on time, but you must have something else in your life that you do. There's not 1 minute in the day where you do something unrelated to your child, at work, on the internet, when the kids are with your parents? I'm interested in what you think and who you are, not just about baby xyz. Or people who end status posts, "I'm out doing abc with baby xyz." Yeah, we figured you probably have to take your newborn places since it can't actually do much for itself. Obviously. And I understand that as people move into this parent stage of life, this becomes more a part of their identity, but isn't there still a person in there? Don't you have a brain that has thoughts and feelings? Yes, you do. You are more than just a baby farm. Shit, I want kids, but you'd better believe my profile picture will still be of me, but maybe with my child.
All that said, I know that facebook is a social medium composed of different people with different beliefs from mine. Luckily, most of my friends are socially knowledgable and aware of their impact on facebook and I don't have to deal with these issues. But you'd better believe I'm getting much more friendly with the "hide friend" and "defriend" options available to me on facebook.
